hi,
Can anyone tell me what is the maximum number of datafiles I can have on my Ora 9i, running Windows 2003?
Is the number of datafiles dependent on the size of the control file? And is the maximum size of the control OS dependent? Then can someone tell me what is the maximum size of the the control file i can have on Win2003 ??

Thanks very much in advance.

Max number of datafiles is 65533. The number of datafiles affect the size of the control file. The size of the control file is dependent on operating system and database creation options; maximum of 20,000 x (database block size).

>>The size of the control file is dependent on operating system and database creation options

And the options are:
Maxdatafiles: specifying max.no of datafiles you can have in your database.
Maxinstances:specifying how many instances can simultaneosly mount and open the database.
maxlogfiles:max. no of logfiles
maxlogmembers:max. no. of of logfile members
Maxloghistory: specifying maximum archived logs.

[1] Size of control file is hardly of few KB.
Note:- control file and datafile are different.

[2] Control file contain the information regarding Number of Datafile that a database can have as well as location of datafile, other than this it also have information about redo log files & many things pertainig to Database.

[3] At the max you can have 8 control file, but if you will have 8 control file then that will degrade database performance.

[4] It's always good to have 3 control file and they should be at different disk, coz in case if one disk get fail you can have other copy of control file on another disk.

[5] Control file is used by database from the start of database till the database is shut down.

For under standing i can say control file control the database..Smile

Whatever Yasir Hashmi said in his earlier post is also correct.
