Issue with the ALTER SYSTEM command [message #206761]

Hi all

I have created a new database and when i try to give the following command....

alter system set open_cursors=400 scope=spfile;

i am getting the below error message..

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-32001: write to SPFILE requested but no SPFILE specified at startup

can some one tell me why i am getting the above error..

Self explanative.
You have used a pfile to start the database.
But asking oracle to write to spfile.

Thanks Mahesh

But how to know which file is being used by the oracle isntance..

The DBS folder contain the following files..

SPFILEORCL.ora ( Is this not an SPFILE..?)
initdw.ora

Please bare me if they are fundamental questions since i am still learning administration
